Infinitive Phrases - IELTS Grammar || www.Amanielts.in || AMAN IELTS

What is the infinitive phrase in IELTS exam?

In this topic, we are gonna go through one type of phrase that is commonly used in IELTS writing and speaking. If you know your infinitives, it should come as no surprise that an infinitive phrase is made up of the infinitive form of the verb which is "to + the verb". Onto the phrase itself, it can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb. The infinitive phrase is a lot more versatile than either the gerund or the participle phrase.

What is the gerund phrase?

Functions as a noun. The participle phrase functions as an adjective and the infinitive phrase. Besides, it can function as all three. The sentence begins with an infinitive phrase, there's an infinitive verb, here's the phrase:

Example 1To finish first in a marathon is Jerry's lifelong goal.

What is Jerry's lifelong goal?

The subject is very similar to a gerund phrase. However, it is an infinitive phrase.

Why use the infinitive form versus the gerund form?

There isn't necessarily a perfect answer to that. It's an area where non-native speakers, that is people whose first language is not English, it's an area where they struggle. But, there is a ground rule and the ground rule, in general, is if you wanna talk about a goal or a process, how to do something or why you're doing something in order to do it then.

In this case with Jerry, "finishing first in a marathon is Jerry's lifelong goal". This is an example where either one will work. However, if you're not describing process or the ground rules then you're describing something as it is happening, you should definitely use the gerund phrase which in general is more versatile.

But remember, versatility within the sentence itself infinitive phrases are number one because they can be a noun as they are here, an adjective or an adverb.

Example 2To satisfy his longing for travel, Jerry has booked an around-the-world ticket.

Who is satisfying their longing for travel?

Jerry, this functions here as a participle phrase. However, remember when you have to satisfy there it is an infinitive. It is an infinitive phrase but it's functioning as an adjective the way that a participle phrase would do.

He's looking at the elephants roaming by. That is satisfying his longing for travel. However, he's not even there yet. He's simply just booked a ticket. And so to satisfy something, something that's about to happen, a goal to finish. A goal, something in the future.

Types of questions in Ielts reading Test There are two different kind of IELTS Reading.|| READING || AMAN IELTS||

Introduction to IELTS Grammar | AMAN IELTS |

Generally, there is no grammar section on the IELTS exam. However, on the writing paper, and the speaking section, grammar is one of the major categories they use to evaluate your speaking and writing abilities. Therefore, grammar is tested on the IELTS exam. There's just not a special grammar section with grammar questions.

How important is grammar?

It's pretty important. Remember that as they evaluate your speaking and writing, the categories they're looking for are grammatical range and accuracy. They wanna see that you don't make a lot of grammar mistakes. And they wanna see that you have the ability to use a wide variety of structures. In other words, they wanna see that you're not using the same very simple sentence structures over and over. But that you have command or you have strong ability with a lot of different grammar structures, verb tenses, other things that show your English ability.

The reason grammar is so important, and something they're focusing on in these two sections is that grammar is central to clear communication. It's definitely worth your time to continue growing your ability to use English grammar accurately, and to be fluent with the structures that you use as you speak and write.

How can you improve the most?

Practice them, use them in your writing and speaking as you practice for the test. After you've practiced, make sure you always correct your errors. Never, never, never just throw one of your writing passages away after you are done. You are not done after you've practised. You need to edit them, to find mistakes, and think about ways to improve. Your goal should be to find your most frequent errors as you write and as you speak.

Furthermore, even after you've edited something one time, or after you've listened to a recording of your speaking responses one time, don't just get rid of them and forget about them. Look at them a few times, edit multiple times, because you are learning constantly. You are always learning new vocabulary.

In this section, we are going to provide you all types of grammar that use in IELTS exam. The list includes grammar structures, verb tenses, other things.

Introduction to conjunctions for IELTS exam || AMAN IELTS || FREE IELTS GRAMMAR PRACTICE

In this lesson, we are going to provide the function of the conjunctions in IELTS exam.

What exactly is a conjunction?

The word junction means to conjoin. The conjunction is something that joins together. It joins together single nouns, verbs and adjectives. Getting a sense of how the conjunction works, joining together dependent and independent clauses.

Example 1:

"He had never gone hiking before, but decide to do so in Park Hill"

Here, we have the conjunction "but". "But" is a conjunction that shows contrast. For the first part of the sentence, he had never gone hiking before. If I put a period there, that is absolutely fine. The subject had never gone hiking. That is a really long verb. After the word, "but". He had decided to do so in Park Hill.

But where is the subject if we just take this part? There is none. You can see that we are combining an independent clause with a dependent clause here. Usually, when you have two independent clauses you would have a comma. He had never gone hiking before, and now all of a sudden, he wants to go to Park Hill.

Example 2:

"To challenge myself, I could either climb Mount Whitney or run a marathon."

Sometimes conjunctions can just combine two things like Mount Whitney or a marathon. That is the conjunction. Here, he wants to do either one of two things, and that's why we have the conjunction "or".

Example 3:

"Exercising every morning, eating healthily, learning to breathe properly, Michael had fully prepared himself for the hike, yet he was still unable to reach the top of the mountain."

There is a conjunction connecting these phrases. These phrases are just fragments. They are not sentences. They are not independent clauses or dependent clauses, because dependent clauses need subjects and verbs. These are just exercising every morning, there is no subject there. But they are phrases joined with the word "and".

We are gonna have an independent clause, because we do not have a sentence yet. These are just a series of fragments, joined with the conjunction "and". When you combine two independent clauses, you will always need a conjunction.
