Q. 17. Narrate the sequence of circumstances under which Joe Keller leels compelled to commit suicide. (V. Imp.) Or Why does Joe Keller commit suicide?
Q. 13. Why does George want to stop Ann's marriage with Chris. Why does he visit Keller's house?
Ans. George is a man of lofty ideals and principles. He comes to know that his father knowingly shipped out defective parts that would crash an aeroplane. He breaks off all - connections with him. _ _ He approves of Chris's intended marriage with his sister Ann. He goes to jail to seek his father's blessing for Chris and Ann. He learns from his father that it was not he but Joe who was responsible for the supply of the defective cylinder heads. This is how it happened Steve came to work that day. He discovered that cylinder heads were coming out of the factory with defects. He phoned Joe for instructions. Joe told him to cover up the cracks, and ship them out. He promised to take the responsibility on himself. In the court, Joe denied having given such instruction or assurance on telephone. It was not possible to prove the truth of telephonic instructions in the court. As a result, Steve was jailed and Joe was acquitted. George is shocked to know the truth. He is convinced that his father is innocent. He hurriedly reaches Keller's home to stop the marriage of his sister with Chris. H real story of the cylinder head scandal and asks her to packup and leave the place. He cannot allow her to marry Chris, whose father had ruined his family. So he visits the Keller's home to stop the marriage of his sister with Chris. . . Kate is alarmed when she hears of George's visit. She wonders why George, who never sent even a postcard to his father since he got back from the war, took an aeroplane from New York to see him. George is now a lawyer. She knows her husband's implication in the cylinder head scandal. She fears that Joe might be in trouble if George opens the case. She pleads to Chris, "Dad and I are stupid people. We don't know anything. You have got to protect us." Joe Keller also feels frightened to know of George's sudden arrival. He fears they might open up the case again to hurt him and Ann might have been sent on purpose to spy on them. So he warns Chris to be vigilant against Ann.

Ans. JOE KELLER Joe Keller is the pivotal character of the play All My Sons'. All the actions of the play concerns him directly or indirectly. He provides the background of the play by his wrong action of critical defective cylinder heads to the Air Force. This resulted in the death of 21 pilots. He put all the blame on his partner, Steve Deever, Heisaheavy - looking man of about 60. He is self - made. He has been in the manufactuing business for many years. He is not highly educated but he has sound common sense. He
ALL MY SONS listens very patiently to others and tries to gain something out of their experience. He is a very good talker. He has a nice sense of humor. Joe Keller is a realist. He does not read a newspaper for the translations of news. His main interest lies in reading "Wants Advertisements". He is interested in knowing what people want. He has no faith in astrology. Joe Keller is a successful businessman. As a businessman, his only aim is to earn money by fair or foul means. When the Air Force wanted cylinder heads urgently. he was not found lacking. He arranged the supply immediately. Thus the Air Force did not cancel their order. He supplied defective cylinders. When he was tried in a court, he put all the blame on his partner, Steve Deever. The court case damaged his business. But Joe was able to build it up again. Joe Keller is a humorous man. His son Chris is very fond of reading the Book Section in the newspaper. He remarks, "You are always reading the book section and you never purchase a book." He makes fun of Frank Lubey, the astrologer, by saying, "Without Frank the stars would not know when to come out." | Joe Keller is devoted to his family. He wants to promote the fortunes of his family at all costs. He wants Chris to have all the good things of life. He has no time for any other thought except working for the welfare of his family. The society to which he belongs does not exist for him. He forgets that he has any duty to his society and country. He comes to know that the defective cylinders have led to the death of 21 pilots. He is satisfied that his son Larry would not be one of them. He has no word of sympathy for the poor pilots whom he has killed. It is sufficient that his son is alive. He keeps on talking about the power of money till the end. Joe's conscience is stirred towards the end. Chris wanted him to be better than what he was. He becomes a completely changed man when he receives the last letter from his son, Larry. He becomes conscious of his guilt on reading Larry's letter. He admits his guilt for the death of 21 pilots. He atones for his guilt by taking his own life. Joe Keller actually represents the theme of the play. The theme is the clash between family interests and social obligations, which attaches the greatest importance to the family interests. He remains selfish from the beginning to the end. But towards the end he realises his selfishness.
Q. 4. Sketch the character of Ann Deever. Or “Ann is gentle, but despite her gentleness, she is capable of holding fast to what she knows. How far is it true of Ann Deever? ( Answer by Jot Chahal)
Ans. ANN DEEVER Ann is the daughter of Steve Deever, partner of Joe Keller. She is 26. She is very gentle. Despite her gentleness she is capable of holding fast to what she knows. She is very charming and intelligent. We can say that Ann Deever is the female counterpart of Chris. She believes in high principles. When her father was tried in court for convicted defective cylinders to the Air Force, she sympathized with him. But when he was found guilty, and sentenced to a long imprisonment, she felt deeply shocked. She cut off all connections with him. She did not even go to the jail to see him. She did not even send him a Christmas card. She looked upon her father as a murderer who was responsible for sending 21 young pilots to death for eaming easy money. She has genuine love for Chris. She feels relaxed in his presence because he is always honest. Even when Joe Keller admits his guilt and George accuses him of destroying the Deever family, she remains attached to Chris. George asks her to refuse to marry Chris who belongs to the Keller family. Ann declines to do so. She does not blame Chris for the crime
and wants to marry him. She was actually Larry's girl. But Larry is reported dead. He has been missing for the last three and a half years. She comes to the Keller family to marry Chris. She is a practical woman. She was engaged to be married to Larry. When she came to know of Larry's death, she did not like to cling to his memory like a sentimental fool. She started loving Chris. She admits the idealism of Chris. But she does not agree with him when he says that all the continued of life are like loot and there is blood on them. She plainly tells him that he must not feel that way. She reminds him that he has a right to whatever he has. When Chris feels unhappy about the money earned by his father, he tells him that there is nothing wrong in that money. He should feel proud that his father put hundreds of planes in the air. Kate wants Ann to wait for the arrival of Lary and not to marry Chris. Ann shows Kate the letter from Larry who had knowingly committed suicide because of his father's cylinder scandal. Ann has an important role in the play. She reveals Joe's guilt. The action of the play picks up speed when she comes to the Keller home. Secondly, she convinces death of Larry by showing his letter. The letter from Larry clears the decks for her marriage with Chris.
Q. 7. Giveacharacter sketch of Frank Lubey. ( All My sons ) Answer by Jot Chahal
Ans. FRANK LUBEY Frank Lubey is a minor character. He is an interesting person. He is thirty two but balding. He is a pleasant - natured man. But he gets angry when opposed in his opinions.He is quite a helpful man. He wants to prove a good neighbor. Kate Keller likes his company. Frankclaims some knowledge of astrology. So Kate Keller has asked him to prepare the horoscope of her missing son, Larry. Frank has come to the conclusion that Larry could not have died on 25th of November as it was his favourable (lucky) day. This information pleases Kate Keller but others do not take Frank seriously. Jim takes him to be just completely out of his mind. Joe Keller remarks that the stars would not know when to come out without the predictions of Frank Lubey. Frank Lubey is given to superstitions. He gives great importance to the falling of the tree planted in the memory of Larry. This tree was planted in the month of August, the month of Larry's birth. Frank considers it to be a good sign. He also rebukes Dr. Jim Bayliss for not believing in anything. Frank Lubey has a happy married life. He has married Lydia. He was lucky that he was not sent to the amy because of his over - age. When boys of 7 years of age were being recruited, Frank was twenty - eight. When they raised the age to twenty - eight, he was twenty nine. He does not have any major role in the play. He is a minor character. His astrological predictions are very helpful to Kate Keller. She goes on believing that her son, Larry, is alive and he will surely come back home.

Ans. KATE KELLER Kate Keller is the major character in the play All My Sons. Kate Keller is the wife of Joe Keller. She is in her early fifties. She is deeply devoted to her family. She is very much upset to learn from the army authorities that her son, Larry, is missing. Other members of her family think that Larry died in an air crash. Kate continues to think that Larry is alive and will certainly come back home. She has been waiting for him for the last three and a half years. She has kept everything belonging to Larry in order. Even his shoes are kept polished for his ready use. Ann, Larry's fiancee, is sure that Larry is dead. So she wants to marry Larry's brother, Chris. But Kate Keller would like Ann to wait for the return of Larry. Kate is a superstitious woman. Once the tree that was planted in Larry's memory was blown down by wind. She thought that it was the sign of Larry's being alive. She asks Frank Lubey to study Larry's horoscope. He says that Larry is alive since he has been reported missing on his lucky day. The arrival of Ann during the month when Larry was born is another factor. She has a strong faith in the goodness of God. She is a considerate wife. She is very much concerned about the welfare of her husband. She had a doubt that her husband had a hand in the cylinder scandal. But she always supported him. Later she comes to know that Joe is guilty. She knows that her idealist son, Chris will be furious. She appeals to Chris to protect his dad. She points out that Steve's son might try to * harm his dad. Kate is very tactful and smart. When George comes to the Keller home, she fears that he has come to expose Joe. She gives George a very affectionate and loving treatment. She tells him to take care of his poor health. She also tells him that her husband, Joe Keller, would help him in getting settled in life and she will get a girl for him. She tries her best to cover the guilt of her husband. She tries to support the lie that Joe was really sick when Steve wanted him to reach the factory. Kate is an intelligent woman. When Chris comes to know about his father's guilt, he wants to leave his home. She begs her husband to ask for the forgiveness of her son. She tries to bring about a patch-up between father and son, this could have saved the situation. But Joe refuses to apologize. The result is tragedy. Joe commits suicide and Kate is left a lonely woman in the world. But she does not lose her balance. She consoles her son. She tells him not to feel guilty of his father's death. She advises him to 'live' on. Kate is a remarkable woman. She tries to strike a compromise between the realism of her husband and the idealism of her son. On the one hand, she asks her husband to admit his guilt before his son and ask for his forgiveness. On the other hand, she tries to convince Chris and George to give up their idealism and have a practical approach to the problems of life. Thus she plays an important role in the play,
